DaimlerChrysler is developing a carbon-fiber-reinforced ceramic brake disc which will improve safety levels and cut weight by around 70 percent. The new technology will be used in the Mercedes-Benz SLR supercar. The material will be displayed at the Frankfurt auto show in September. Compared with conventional gray cast iron, the new ceramic is characterized by its high heat resistance. The material can withstand a maximum thermal load of 1,400 to 1,600 degrees celsius -double the amount of a cast iron disc.
