HAMBURG - German online auction company ricardo.de celebrated the launch of the Smart City Cabrio by auctioning off five of the convertible minicars at the Geneva auto show on February 29.
The five cars were specially produced for the auction with steel-blue body panels and gray leather interiors.
'This is a world premiere - for the first time a large company such as DaimlerChrysler (through its Micro Compact Car subsidiary) is using the Internet and ricardo.de to launch a new product before the official market rollout,' said Stefan Glaenzer, chairman of ricardo.de.
The proceeds from the auction will go to the charity Terre Des Hommes Germany, which has been helping endangered children worldwide for 30 years.
Advertisements for the Smart City Cabrio have been created by Zurich-based agency Weber Hodel Schmid. The car goes on general sale later this month.
