Alfa to move Spider, GTV production
Alfa Romeo will transfer production of the Spider and GTV coupe from its Arese plant near Milan to Pininfarina in September.
Production of the two models fell below 10,000 last year. Pininfarina, an independent coachbuilder, will build and paint the bodies in its Grugliasco plant, while final assembly will be located at San Giorgio Canavese. Alfa is planning a replacement for the Spider in 2003. Pininfarina built 200,000 units of the previous generation Alfa Spider between 1966 to 1994.

Honda says no to Phoenix tie-up
LONDON - Honda quashed any hopes of a collaboration with Phoenix, the British consortium that has bought Rover Cars from BMW. Nick Stephenson, a member of the Phoenix consortium and former design and engineering director for Rover, met May 18 with Minoru Harada, president of Honda Motor Europe last week. Honda said it 'will not become involved in any future alliance or collaborative business activity beyond the existing relationship.' Many components used by the Rover 45 will continue to be licensed from Honda.
In other late Rover news, The UK's Daily Telegraph reported May 19 that Phoenix was negotiating to buy Midland Power Train, the engine foundry and gearbox operation at Longbridge, from BMW. The newspaper also reported that Mayflower Vehicle Systems Plc is considering a deal to buy BMW's Swindon stamping plant.
