Subaru of America Inc. will put the ST/X concept vehicle shown at the Los Angeles auto show in January into production.
Production will start in the third quarter of 2002 for the 2003 model year, said Fred Adcock, executive vice president of the US sales and marketing subsidiary.
Subaru expects to sell about 24,000 units annually at full production, solely for the US market, and possibly Canada, Adcock said. The ST/X is based on the Subaru Legacy passenger car. It has a pickup bed behind the four-door passenger compartment.
The new model will be built exclusively at Subaru-Isuzu Automotive Inc., a joint venture plant in Lafayette, Indiana, that builds the Subaru Legacy and Legacy Outback; the Isuzu Rodeo and Amigo; and the Rodeo-based Honda Passport.
