1985: GM buys Hughes Aircraft Co. for $5 billion and combines it with its own Delco Electronics. It names the subsidiary Hughes Electronics Corp.
1989: Hughes announces plan to increase non-defense business
1994: Hughes launches DirecTV digital satellite TV service
1997: Hughes spins off defense business and hands Delco Electronics over to GM's Delphi Automotive Systems. Also, Michael Smith, brother of GM Chairman Jack Smith, becomes chairman and CEO of Hughes Electronics
May 2000: GM uses Hughes tracking stock to buy back GM common shares and contribute to its employee benefits plans
Sept. 2000: GM says it is considering a Hughes spinoff
