GENEVA - Tata claims to have sold nearly 1 million Indica superminis in just two years in its home market of India.
Exports to Europe began in November 2000, with limited numbers of the Indica being shipped mainly to Italy.
For Europe, the Indica needs a more modern engine range. The only engine it has is a 1.4-liter, 49hp, indirect injection, normally aspirated diesel.
Tata says it is developing a turbo version of this engine, and is in talks with European carmakers to source a gasoline engine that meets Euro 3 emissions standards.
At the Geneva auto show, Tata showed a three-door, short-wheelbase version of its Safari off-roader. The vehicle - so far only a concept - was developed in conjunction with Heuliez of France.
