Siemens Automotive is working on an Integrated Powertrain Management system that links the company's engine and transmission management systems.
Kregg Wiggins, vice president of powertrain at Siemens in North America, said it adds substantially more fuel economy gains to those offered by individual powertrain system controls. These include Siemens' adaptive transmission, the integrated starter generator or regenerative braking and battery management systems.
'We have seen fuel economy improvements in excess of 20 percent in simulations,' said Wiggins. He expects the first applications of integrated powertrain management software systems in a few years' time. They will be so-called soft-hybrid vehicles fitted with integrated starter-generator systems.
