To the Editor,
Why is Robert Lutz little short of a hero in the auto industry? In a world of egomaniacs, here is a guy who seems to have nothing to prove, has no interest in time-wasting politics and expresses his ideas clearly.
At an auto importer trade show in Italy a decade ago, I was just a very junior executive for a potential Chrysler importer in a small European market. Most people there didn't know the European market, let alone Italy.
Lutz was standing in the Chrysler booth. I took my chance and went to say hello, expecting a quick and cold handshake. On the contrary, we had a 20-minute conversation. He knew everything about our market, our company and the state of our talks with one department in Chrysler International. He made me feel important and at that moment I felt I could have gone to war for a boss like Lutz.
