Volkswagen figured it had a name with impeccable meaning for its new coupe cabriolet. Eos is the Greek goddess of dawn and the mother of the wind – excellent imagery for an open-air car.
But to be sure it didnt mean anything rude in any other language, researchers duly went through all the living tongues spoken in the world. Or thought they had.
At the UK launch, a Welsh-speaking person told VW personnel that Eos had another meaning in his language.
Just as VW executives were mentally calculating the cost of all-new car badges and brochures, they learned with relief that eos is the Welsh word for nightingale, the bird known for its melodious songs at night.
