Land Rover is considering a lightweight aluminum construction borrowed from sister division Jaguar for its next generation of SUVs.
The company used aluminum body panels for the 1970s Range Rover and most recently on the Range Rover Sport, but not for the chassis structure.
The first vehicle being considered for this radical switch is the new Range Rover, scheduled for replacement around 2010. Because the Discovery and its sporty derivative, the Range Rover Sport, are due for replacement a couple of years later, the company is including those models in its exploration of aluminum.
Said a company insider: Theres no decision yet, and we dont have to decide for a couple of years, but it seems a logical step to investigate it.
