Ford Motor will introduce a plug-in electric commercial van in 2010, followed by a plug-in Ford Focus-sized electric car in 2011 being developed with supplier and coachbuilder Magna International.
These will be pure-electric vehicles, not hybrids mated to a gasoline engine.
In 2012, the company also intends to deliver the next-generation of hybrids, including plug-ins. Ford said it plans to electrify its coming global car platform that spawns the Fusion.
Answering reporters questions after the presentation, Chairman Bill Ford said the incoming Obama administration could use new federal gas taxes or other incentives to bolster demand for more fuel-efficient vehicles. He sees US gas prices climbing back to the $4 per gallon range following their recent fall.
