MUNICH -- Toyota has again missed its goal of becoming Germanys largest import brand.
With 96,781 new registrations in 2008, down 27 percent from 2007, the Japanese automaker trailed Renault and Skoda in Germany and was only slightly ahead of Peugeot.
In the near term, we wont become the biggest importer, a source at Toyotas Cologne headquarters conceded.
But company managers argue that Toyotas comparative standing suffers because its registration figures are not inflated by short-term dealer self-registrations, a common industry practice.
The company this year will focus on improving its German market share, which came to 3.1 percent last year, a manager said.
