MUNICH -- Volkswagen and its African partner ASGM have delayed plans to set up a semiknockdown kit (SKD) production site near Angolas capital city Luanda.
A VW spokeswoman said that the buildup of the assembly line for SKD production is scheduled to start by early 2010. Previously, VW announced that it would start production in the first half of 2009.
VW plans to sell about 10,000 units a year two years after ramping up kit production of the Polo small car, lower-medium Jetta and upper-medium Passat in Angola. The kits will come from Germany and Spain.
Luanda will be VWs second plant in Africa. Its other factory is in Uitenhage, South Africa.
