MUNICH -- The UK distributor I.M. Group said it will begin importing cars made by China's Great Wall Motor Co. into Europe.
The company said it will import Great Wall cars into the UK, Ireland and Scandinavia starting in 2011 after first launching distribution in the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in 2010.
I.M. Group did not say which Great Wall models it will distribute. It said the Chinese carmaker has designed and built models specifically to meet EU whole-vehicle type approval standards.
“This will ensure that Great Wall models deliver high standards of crash-worthiness, equal to those of modern European and Japanese vehicles,” the company said in a statement.
Founded in 1976, I.M. Group is an importer and distributor for the Japanese brands Subaru, Isuzu and Daihatsu.
It has operated in the Chinese market for over 15 years and currently employs 40 people at its Beijing office.
Great Wall unveiled the Phenom at the Guangzhou auto show earlier this year. It said the model was designed to meet European New Car Assessment Program standards and would be exported to Europe in the future.
