MONTGOMERY, Alabama -- Despite its heavy reliance on Europeans to create its lineup, few of the cars in the startup automaker's eight-model range are due to be sold in Europe.
“For Europe, we are planning to export from the United States about 10 percent of our US planned production of 3 million units by 2018,” Hybrid Kinetic Motors CEO Chuantao Wang said.
The former General Motors Co. die engineer said such a tiny target is due to the fact that “in Europe, only Russia has natural gas resources.”
HK Motors wants to use compressed natural gas as the primary fuel for its range of hybrids.
Wang was surprised when told by a reporter that natural gas is widely available in Europe. Last year in Italy alone 127,836 CNG-powered vehicles were sold, representing almost 6 percent of total sales.
