FRANKFURT -- Germany's new car sales rose by 22 percent to 304,543 units in May, compared with the same month in 2010, the Federal Motor Vehicle Office (KBA) said Friday.
BMW AG's BMW and Mini brands were among the biggest gainers with a 27.6 percent rise to 29,346. The brands sold 119,864 cars in the first five months.
Volkswagen AG sold 67,613 VW-badged cars in May, a rise of 25 percent in year-on-year figures, making VW Germany's best-selling brand with a 22.2 market share. Between January and May, the brand sold 295,045 cars in Germany.
Mercedes-Benz sales rose 0.1 percent to 26,775 cars. Smart sales were up 15.6 percent to 3,178. In total, Mercedes brand sold 110,939 new cars in Germany between January and May. Smart sales were 13,379 in the same period.
