The votes are in and the winners are ….
Over the past two months, Automotive News Europe asked its online visitors to cast votes for the most significant vehicles of the last 125 years.
The response was overwhelming.
Nearly 100,000 individual votes were cast for the Legends on Wheels.
After a panel of judges selected 10 vehicles for each category, visitors to legendsonwheels.com were encouraged to cast votes for the most important vehicles, decade by decade, from the 1880s to present day. Voters also were asked to select the concept that likely will become a future legend.
Among the 130 candidates vying for the "Legends on Wheels" title were the 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen, 1909 Ford Model T, 1925 Rolls-Royce Phantom, 1934 Citroen Traction Avant, 1948 Ford F-Series, 1959 Mini and 1963 Aston Martin DB5. Also on that list are the 1974 Volkswagen Golf, 1984 Chrysler Voyager minivan, 1996 BMW Z3 and the 2005 Dacia Logan.
So who won?
We're not saying. Not yet, at least.
The winners will be announced at the Frankfurt auto show in September. The winning automotive manufacturers will be invited to a special awards ceremony in Frankfurt, where they will be presented with the "Legends on Wheels" award.
Automotive News Europe also will commemorate the winners in a special hardcover book, titled Legends on Wheels. In all, 40 vehicles will be featured in the 120-page book that will be released Sept. 13. Details on how to purchase the book are available at legendsonwheels.com.
In the meantime, start creating a list of your personal automotive legends. Then check back in September to see if it matches the Legends list.
