FRANKFURT -- BMW i Ventures, a unit of BMW Group, will invest in Chargemaster, a UK provider of electric vehicle charging points.
BMW and Chargemaster will create a public charging network for BMW electric car owners across the UK. Chargemaster will also provide charging equipment and sites for the BMW car sharing service DriveNow.
BMW announced the deal today but did not disclose any financial details.
A source said BMW will buy a 2 percent stake in the UK company. A British media report said the deal was worth around 500,000 pounds.
The agreement comes as BMW prepares to launch the first vehicle in its 'i' EV range, the i3, later this year.
"We see Chargemaster playing an important role in preparing the way for E-mobility. This investment and wide ranging cooperation agreement will accelerate our [E-mobility] activities,'' Thorsten Mattig, head of BMW i Ventures, said in a statement.
Chargemaster, based near Luton, England, designs, manufactures and markets charging points for domestic, commercial and public use. It also supplies software, installation and maintenance services.
