German transmission supplier Getrag and partner Dongfeng Motor Corp. have launched construction of a dual-clutch transmission plant in the central China city of Wuhan.
The plant, due to start production in early 2016, will build as many as 250,000 units of Getrag's six-speed dual-clutch transmission a year for Dongfeng. Eventually the plant will expand to produce 1 million transmissions annually.
Total investment in the plant will be 120 million euros (1 billion yuan), said Dongfeng, a state-owned automaker headquartered in Wuhan.
Aside from supplying Dongfeng, the transmission plant will supply other automakers in China as well as other Asian markets.
By combining the convenience of a conventional automatic transmission with the efficiency of a manual transmission, dual-clutch transmissions save fuel, according to Getrag.
Getrag, of Untergruppenbach, Germany, has a transmission plant in Nanchang in east China's Jiangxi province. That factory supplies Jiangling Motor Group Co., a state-owned producer of light commercial vehicles.
Dongfeng, a leading Chinese truckmaker headquartered in Wuhan, makes cars under its own brand. It also has passenger vehicle joint ventures with Honda Motor Co., Nissan Motor Co., Kia Motors Corp. and PSA/Peugeot-Citroen.
