Why did Skoda decide to launch the Rapid Spaceback?
Skoda needs an affordable model to compete in western Europe's popular compact segment where buyers prefer hatchbacks to sedans. The Rapid Spaceback will be positioned above the Fabia subcompact and below the larger Octavia compact.
How will it be marketed?
To appeal to young families on a tight budget, the entry-level Rapid will offer a low-spec version with an 86-hp, 1.2-liter gasoline engine, five-speed manual transmission and no air conditioning. The starting price for this basic version of the car is 14,990 euros.
Any new technology?
The Rapid Spaceback is Skoda's first compact model to offer electric power steering.
The Rapid Spaceback has a more dynamic design and more customization options than the Rapid sedan to appeal to a younger customer group. It is shorter than the Rapid sedan but its wheelbase is the same so backseat passenger legroom is the best in its class, Skoda says.
