Toyota Europe CEO Didier Leroy says that to become a true leader you should not worry about making your boss happy.
“Do what you believe is right for the company, not what you think will please your boss,” Leroy said during his keynote speech at the 2014 Automotive News Europe Rising Stars awards presentation last night.
His other advice to the 14 future leaders of the global automotive industry:
- Be a positive example for your team by having high expectations of yourself and taking quick action whenever needed
- Be accessible to the people who work for you because if you are available to them they will have increased respect for you
- Think and act like an entrepreneur, which means don’t just do things that you believe will be beneficial to your unit or division, do things that are right for the entire global company
- Be passionate and, most important of all, create and inspire passion within your team.
Leroy’s advice is the result of 32 years in the automotive industry, during which time he has honed his own leadership skills working closely with people such as Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn and Toyota Motor Corp. President Akio Toyoda.
Leroy, who started as worker on the shop floor at a Renault plant in France, has been president of Toyota Motor Europe since 2010 and a senior managing officer of Toyota Motor Corp. since 2012.
