Lexus is counting on the NX gasoline-electric hybrid to help it stand out against Europe’s top-selling premium large crossovers. Unlike rivals such as the BMW X5 and Mercedes M class, there will be no diesel- or gasoline-powered versions of the NX. Instead the NX combines a 155-hp 2.5-liter gasoline engine with a 143-hp electric motor that drives the front wheels, resulting in combined maximum power of 197 hp. The all-wheel-drive NX offers a combined 265 hp because it adds a 68-hp electric motor to power the rear wheels. The NX, like its larger sibling model, the RX, has no transmission shaft.

How much did the NX downsize from the larger RX?
Not much. At 4630mm, the NX is just 140mm shorter that the 4770mm-long RX.
Is the hybrid system different?
Instead of a large battery stealing space at the bottom of the trunk, the NX has two smaller batteries housed below the rear seats. This increases trunk space to 555 liters in all-wheel-drive variants and to 580 liters in fwd versions.

The Remote Touch Interface offers a touchpad in the center console that can control all the vehicle's secondary functions in an extremely intuitive way.
A wireless charging tray in the center armrest that is compatible with most smartphones.
How is the stereo?
Lexus says the NX is the first automobile to incorporate Mark Levinson's Clari-Fi system that can generate CD-quality sound from digital audio files.
The NX is only slightly smaller than the RX, but its starting price in Germany is more than 20,000 euros less. Toyota’s premium-car subsidiary expects to sell 24,000 units of the NX in Europe and Russia next year, which would help to boost the brand’s total sales in the region to 65,000 units in 2015 from an estimated 50,000 this year.
Launch date: September (Europe); October (Russia); December (U.S.)
Base price: 39,800 (Germany)
Where built: Kyushu, Japan
Annual production capacity: 120,000
Lowest CO2 emissions: 116g/km
Main rivals: Audi Q7, BMW X5, Mercedes M class
Lexus also hopes the NX’s bold looks will lead to conquest sales from German competitors. “The NX’s polarizing design comes directly from the top of the company, where Chairman Akio Toyoda also acts as Lexus chief branding officer and master driver,” Lexus Europe Vice President Alain Uyttenhoven said.
