Audi CEO Rupert Stadler calls the A3 Sportback e-tron the “perfect electric vehicle for every day driving.” He says that because 80 percent of daily roundtrip commutes in Europe are less than 50km, which is the electric-only range of Audi’s first plug-in hybrid.

How much weight does the plug-in hybrid system add?
About 335kg, with 148kg for the batteries and 70kg for the electric motor and the electronic system.
Top speed is 130kph in electric mode and 222kph with the gasoline engine. Acceleration from 0 to 60kph takes 4.9 seconds in battery mode, while going from 0 to 100kph takes 7.6 seconds combining both powertrains. Maximum output is 204 hp and 350 newton meters of torque.
EV for electric only drive; S for sporty; and Hybrid Hold to preserve battery power for use later.
Battery recharging times?
It takes 3 hours and 45 minutes using a 220-volt wall socket; 2 hours and 15 minutes with a 380-volt socket.
Audi declined to share sales targets for its first plug-in hybrid. It says its factories are flexible enough to respond to customer demand.
If more travel is required, the A3 e-tron’s internal combustion engine adds another 890km of range, resulting in a combined total of 940km.

The A3 variant gets its zero-emissions power from an 8.8-kilowatt-hour battery and a 75-kilowatt/102-hp electric motor.

The gasoline powerplant is a 150-hp 1.4-liter TFSI turbo. The A3 e-tron is Audi’s most frugal model using just 1.5 liters of gasoline per 100km, equivalent to 35g/km of CO2, according to Europe’s fuel economy test.
