There's something irresistible about the life of Enzo Ferrari that continues to fascinate filmmakers. Dashing British actor Christian Bale has been cast as the young Ferrari in a film to be directed by Michael Mann, according to Deadline, a Hollywood entertainment website.
The film is said to feature several periods in Ferrari's eventful life, particularly 1957, the year a Ferraridriven by Spanish driver Alfonso de Portago crashed at the Mille Miglia, killing de Portago, his co-driver and nine spectators. Ferrari was indicted on manslaughter charges and eventually acquitted in a trial that dragged on until 1961.
De Portago was one of a number of race drivers killed driving Ferraris. Others include Alberto Ascari, Eugenio Castellotti, Luigi Musso, Peter Collins, Wolfgang von Trips and Lorenzo Bandini.
