Geely Automobile's new global marque, Lynk & CO, plans to challenge European volume brands starting in 2018 by offering models designed and engineered in Sweden, built in China and sold at extremely competitive prices thanks to direct distribution. Alain Visser, who has held top jobs at Ford, General Motors, and Volvo, discussed Lynk & CO's product and distribution strategy with Automotive News Europe Editor Luca Ciferri on the sidelines of the brand's recent unveiling in Berlin.
What are Lynk & CO's midterm targets?
We aim for more than 500,000 annual global sales within five years. By that time , our range will comprise at least five models, but there could be more.
Why did you choose Berlin for the brand's unveiling?
It is pretty symbolic being in Berlin. With the Lynk & CO brand we clearly want to look our German competitors in the eye, showing them that we have the technology and the quality of a German-engineered product. Germany will be one of our first markets and a priority market.
What is Lynk & CO's rollout plan?
We will launch in China in the fourth quarter of 2017 and in Europe and in the United States simultaneously in late 2018.
Will the 01 compact SUV be your only product when you debut in Europe and the United States?
By then, it is likely that in China we will have a second product. We are not sure yet if we will commercialize it in other parts of the world.
Will it be a compact sedan?
