SEOUL -- Kia will debut a subcompact SUV later this year as the automaker bids to enter a booming segment and challenge models such as the Nissan Juke.
The model will be a "crossover utility vehicle (CUV)" based on the Rio/Pride subcompact car, Kia said Wednesday in an earnings presentation, without elaborating further.
The SUV will be introduced in Europe and South Korea later this year, Kia said.
Reports have said the model will be called the Stonic after Kia trademarked the name. The Stonic likely will debut at the Frankfurt auto show in September, according to reports.
Kia currently sells the Niro hybrid small SUV globally and the KX3 in China.
