Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson wants to make the Swedish automaker “younger, more diverse and more international,” he told me in an interview earlier this year.
He achieved all three with the hiring of Martina Buchhauser.
When Buchhauser officially joins Volvo later this year the 50-year-old German will be the third woman and the sixth non-Swede on Volvo’s executive management team, which will increase in size to 15 members to accommodate her newly created post.
Buchhauser is the second woman added to Volvo’s top management board since last October, which was when Hanna Fager was promoted to senior vice president of human resources. Buchhauser and Fager are joined by Maria Hemberg, who has been senior vice president of group legal and general counsel since 2012.
Renault is the only other European automaker with three women on its highest-level management board. They are: Chief Financial Officer Clotilde Delbos; Marie-Francoise Damesin, who is head of human resources; and Mouna Sepehri, who, among other things, leads the company’s legal and communications departments. Damesin and Sepehri were name two of Automotive News Europe's 25 Leading Women in the European Automotive Industry last year.
When it comes to Volvo’s efforts to internationalize, the board’s other additions in roughly the last half year include manufacturing boss Javier Varela of Spain, Asia-Pacific boss Xiaolin Yuan of China and Chief Digital Officer Atif Rafiq of the U.S.
