PARIS -- Western European car sales rose 4.9 percent last month, lifted by strong demand in France, Italy and Spain, according to industry data compiled by LMC Automotive.
Registrations in August, a relatively light sales month, came to 801,745 vehicles, the consulting firm said on Tuesday. Its numbers are based on national data and estimates for some smaller markets.
The advance lifted the seasonally adjusted annualized rate (SAAR) of Western European sales by 6.8 percent from July levels to 14.46 million cars, LMC said.
Registrations rose 9.4 percent in France, 13 percent in Spain and 16 percent in Italy, according to data published in recent days. Greek sales jumped an estimated 34 percent.
By contrast, German car registrations rose a more modest 3.5 percent while UK sales tumbled 6.4 percent.
