PARIS -- Peugeot will expand its compact lineup with the introduction of the 408, a coupe-style crossover that will be revealed at the end June.
The 408 was teased on Tuesday with a photo of the grille area. It would join the 308 hatchback and wagon and the 3008 SUV in Peugeot’s lineup. The Stellantis brand did not offer any more details.
“It combines the characteristic codes of SUVs with a dynamic fastback silhouette,” Peugeot said in a news release, adding that it would be a “global” model. Peugeot currently uses the 408 nameplate on a compact sedan.
The coupe-crossover style is gaining popularity among mass-market brands, after having been introduced in Europe on larger premium cars such as the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE. Current mainstream models include the Renault Arkana, the Volkswagen ID5 EV and the Toyota CH-R, both of which are classified as SUVs or crossovers. Designers and product planners say the style is especially suitable for electric cars, because it is more aerodynamic than traditional SUVs, which can help improve range.
