Compact minivan sales in Europe will surpass full-size minivan sales by next year. The compact sector - defined by the Renault Megane Scenic in 1996 - grew 26 percent in the first six months of 1999 thanks to launches of the Mitsubishi Space Star, Fiat Multipla and GM Zafira.
Sales came within 2,000 units of the larger Renault Espace/Ford Galaxy minivan segment. And with new compact minivans due from Ford, Volkswagen, Nissan and Citroen by next year, the large people-carrier segment is expected to start declining.
Already this year GM has discontinued Sintra sales in Europe to concentrate on the compact Astra-based Zafira minivan, and Renault is revamping the Scenic range to include new engines, new styling - and a forthcoming 4x4 version (right).
