Toyota is the most valuable auto brand, survey shows

Toyota remains the most valuable automotive brand worldwide, followed by Mercedes-Benz and BMW, in a new survey of the 100 most valuable brands, with Hyundai cracking the top 50 list for the first time.

Consumer electronics giant Apple leaped from No. 2 in 2012 to top the list of the world's most valuable brands in 2013 as ranked by Interbrand, a unit of advertising giant Omnicom Group.

Coca-Cola slipped from No. 1 to No. 3 behind Apple and Google respectively in the rankings released on Monday.

The survey, in its 14th year, measures brands based on financial performance, advertising exposure, consistency, customer understanding, clarity and relevance.

The remainder of the Top 10 is relatively unchanged from 2012 with IBM, Microsoft, GE, McDonald's, Samsung, Intel and Toyota rounding out the group.

Toyota retained its No. 10 ranking from 2012, while Hyundai joined the list at No. 43, moving up 10 points from 2012, as its brand value jumped 21 percent from the previous year to 9 billion dollars.

"Hyundai's significant growth in brand value reflects our enhanced status in the global markets,'' said Won Hong Cho, Hyundai Motor's head of marketing, in a statement.

Mercedes held onto its No. 11 ranking for the second year after placing 12th in 2011 and 2010. BMW, ranked right behind Mercedes, retained its No. 12 ranking from 2012, after jumping to No. 12 from No. 15 in 2011 and 2010.

Among other automotive brands, Honda placed No. 20, up from No. 21 last year. Volkswagen rose to No. 34 from No. 39 in 2012. Ford also showed improvement, moving to No. 42 from 45 in 2012.

Audi improved four spots to 51 from 55 in 2012. Porsche improved to 64 from 72 in 2012, while Nissan followed close behind, moving to No. 65 from No. 73.

Kia clocked in at No. 83, up from No. 87 last year and Chevrolet joined the list at No. 89, becoming the first General Motors brand to be named one of the top global brands ranked in the survey.

Ferrari rounded out the automakers on the list at No. 98, up one spot from the previous year.
