Lena Schiewe,

Marketing director EMEA, Clarios
What was your first automotive job and why were you interested in the industry?
I started in the automotive industry while I was still studying. It was an incredibly exciting experience. There were many reasons why I was fascinated by this industry, but what stood out most was the international work environment. I loved being surrounded by colleagues from around the world. Experiencing new countries and cultures helped me broaden my perspectives and skills.
Your greatest achievement?
When I took on the role of head of trade marketing Europe in 2019, my primary objective was to unite nine separate marketing as a single, cohesive unit. By consolidating our resources and eliminating redundant efforts, I unlocked our team’s full potential and created a powerhouse concept. This has helped Clarios’ Varta brand remain the top 12-volt car battery brand in Europe, with impressive growth rates in the region. Today, our team operates as a tightly knit group of experts. We draw inspiration and knowledge from each other. We have learned to leverage our strengths and make use of synergies. The results speak for themselves. I'm proud of the transformation we have undergone and am excited to see what the future holds for Varta as well as our team of talented marketers.

What was your biggest failure and what did it teach you?
In marketing, new ideas, concepts, and go-to-market strategies are essential to stay ahead. It takes vision and courage to make meaningful progress. One of the most significant lessons I have learned is that when you and your team genuinely believe in an idea, it's crucial to focus on inspiring others to join you on your journey from the start, rather than allowing negativity to sap your energy. Here, communication with others is key. That way you can build momentum, generate enthusiasm and bring your vision to life. It also helps to stay positive when facing challenges. Setbacks are really an opportunity to learn, adapt and improve. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this mindset provided crucial backing for the necessary changes in sales and marketing. As a team, we were able to swiftly and innovatively adapt to the new landscape. With this transformational spirit, we used the challenge as a chance to achieve remarkable growth.
What is your current challenge at work?
I’ve just accepted a new job that involves transforming formerly separate departments into one marketing organization in the EMEA (Europe Middle East Africa) region. Our primary objective will be to provide best-in-class customer experience by uniting the functions of product management, brand and communications, pricing, digital excellence, training and technical support as well as trade marketing. I’m thrilled to take on this new challenge. I’m excited to collaborate with my colleagues and believe this transformation will help achieve outstanding results for our customers and our business.
What is the best advice you have ever received?
My dad always used to say that people matter. You can demand a lot from them but at the same time you also must help them grow both professionally and personally.
