PARSDORF, Germany -- BMW is bullish about the potential of its own battery design and Neue Klasse underpinnings to overtake electric vehicle rivals, including market leader Tesla.
The automaker's confidence comes as it starts production of its first battery cell samples, which have been designed to power its new generation of all-electric cars starting in 2025.
When asked by Automotive News Europe how BMW would close the gap with rivals, specifically Tesla, BMW Group production boss Milan Nedeljkovic said: "Tesla needs to close the gap with us. In fact, we don't see a gap to Tesla."
Nedeljkovic is confident because BMW believes it is on track to halve battery costs with its new, so-called Gen 6 cells.
