MG's big rise in Europe last month was helped by the success of the automaker's ZS compact SUV, which was Spain's top-seller in December.
The subsidiary of China's SAIC offers the gasoline-powered ZS for less than 15,000 Euros in Spain, which helped it outsell the Renault Clio and Dacia Sandero, which finished No. 2 and No. 3, respectively last month.
The Clio starts at about 16,100 euros while the Dacia Sandero's base price is about 13,200 euros, according to the automakers' websites.
MG's focus on affordability also helped it to outsell Volkswagen and Peugeot in the higher-margin private customer channel, according to figures from market researcher Dataforce.
VW and Peugeot beat MG overall because they sell more vehicles than MG in the lower-margin fleet and rental channels.
