Lotus more than doubled sales on strong demand for the Emira mid-engine sports car.

Twenty-three brands increased their February European sales by more than the market, which was up 12 percent, while 35 brands ended the second month of the year with volume gains.

Meanwhile, more than 25 brands were in negative territory last month, according to preliminary figures from market researcher Dataforce.

Six brands, led by China's BYD and MG, Geely subsidiaries Lotus and Lynk & CO and Stellantis' Alfa Romeo, reported triple-digit percentage sales gains.

Meanwhile, Maserati, Genesis, Cupra, Land Rover, Dacia, Aston Martin, Nissan and Tesla were among the 23 brands that had double-digit percentage increases, according to data representing about 94 percent of sales in the European Union plus ETFA countries and the U.K.

BYD and MG were led by the Atto 3 compact SUV and MG4 compact hatchback, respectively.

Lotus' doubling of sales can be attributed to the new Emira sports car while sister brand Lynk & CO continues to see rising interest for its only model in Europe, the subscription-focused 01 compact crossover.

Alfa Romeo more than doubled its European sales because of demand for the Tonale compact SUV, which accounted for 66 percent of the Italian brand's sales.

Maserati increased sales 97 percent to 564. The new Grecale premium midsize SUV accounted for 78 percent of the Stellantis luxury brand's volume. In January, that share was 81 percent.

Hyundai Group's luxury brand, Genesis, was up 83 percent to 210 units.

Volkswagen Group's Cupra subsidiary increased sales 69 percent to 10,265, led by the Born compact electric hatchback.

Land Rover had a 63 percent gain to 5,324 units helped by a more than 500 percent gain in sales for the Range Rover and continued brisk demand for the Defender.

Dacia increase sales 55 percent because of the Sandero, which remained Europe's top-seller for the second straight month.

A 70 percent gain in sales of the Qashqai underpinned Nissan's overall increase of 40 percent for the month of February.

Tesla was up 39 percent for the month because it more than doubled sales of the Model Y.

Also, among the other brands that recorded market-topping gains during the month were Porsche (+33 percent), Mazda (+30 percent), Lamborghini (+27 percent) and VW (+23 percent), according to Dataforce's preliminary figures.

The 12 brands that recorded gains but were below the market average included Renault (+11 percent), Lexus (+7.1 percent) and Mercedes-Benz (+6.7 percent).

A 70 percent gain in sales of the Qashqai underpinned Nissan's overall increase of 40 percent for the month of February.
