How Maserati gave its first EV supercar speed

The GranTurismo Folgore's battery pack will be assembled by Maserati at Stellantis' battery hub near Turin using pouch cell from LG Chem’s factory in Poland.

The Maserati GranTurismo Folgore's total installed power is more than 1,188 hp, but the maximum available power from the wheels is 749 hp because of the limits of the current battery and inverters.

Maserati’s first battery-electric car, the GranTurismo Folgore, will start being delivered to customers by year-end.

Maserati says the coupe goes 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) in 2.7 seconds. That beats the 2.8 seconds that it take the Porsche Taycan Turbo S four-door sedan’s to reach the same speed in "launch mode."

    Key figures
    • The coupe’s total “installed power” from the three electric motors is nearly 1,200 hp, but the maximum available power from the wheels is 749 hp because of the limits of the current battery and inverters.
    • Maximum overall torque is 1,350 newton meters.
    • The coupe’s estimated range is 450 km in the WLTP test cycle.
    • The GranTurismo Folgore weighs 2,260 kg, which is 465 kg more than its V-6 sibling.
    • The EV coupe will offer tires with low roll resistance as an option. The tires provide less traction but boost range by 20 km, Maserati said.

The GranTurismo Folgore has a 92.5-kilowatt-hour battery pack, of which 83 kWh is usable, that powers three radial permanent magnet electric motors -- one on the front axle and one on each rear wheel. Each motor has peak power of 300 kW (396 hp).

Marelli developed the electric motors, which will be assembled at the Tier 1 supplier's plant in Modugno, Italy.

During a test drive of a prototype of the EV in Rome this month, Davide Danesin, who leads the team that developed the GranTurismo’s full-electric and combustion variants, said the Folgore’s three-motor solution is more expensive than the one-motor plus two-gear transmission offered in the Taycan

However, Maserati’s configuration also results in a higher maximum speed -- 320 kph (about 200 mph) -- than the 260 kph offered by the Taycan.

The GranTurismo Folgore’s battery pack will be assembled by Maserati at Stellantis’ battery hub in Mirafiori, near Turin, using pouch cell supplied from LG Chem’s factory in Poland, which also provides cells for the Taycan.

Danesin said it is unlikely that Maserati be the first Stellantis brand to use solid-state batteries. Europe’s second-largest automaker aims to offer the technology by 2026.

The next-generation power packs promise safety, cost, weight and performance improvements over today's lithium ion batteries.

“[Solid-state batteries] have a more favorable power-to-weight ratio,” Danesin said. “But their discharge time is not quick enough to supply energy to three electric motors with the desired performance.”

The Maserati GranTurismo Folgore's average price in Europe will be about 230,000 euros.

    Electrified by 2025

The GranTurismo Folgore will be followed by the battery-electric variant of the Grecale midsize SUV and the GranCabrio Folgore, a convertible version of the model line.

The battery-powered Grecale is due before year-end, while the GranCabrio Folgore is expected in 2024.

The Quattroporte large sedan, Ghibli midsize sedan and Levante large SUV are starting their runout phase in 2023, product planning manager Mirco Geraci said.

The successors of Quattroporte and Levante will be electric and be launched by the end of 2025.

Maserati does not plan a successor for the Ghibli as the market preference in large segments has shifted toward SUVs.

By the end of 2025 the battery electric variant of the MC20 supercar will also be available.

Maserati CEO Davide Grasso said last year the brand will have an electric-only product range by 2030.
