Maserati prices latest EV €25,000 below ICE variant

RIMINI, Italy – Maserati is offering the GranCabrio Folgore, its third full-electric car, at a starting price that is more than €25,000 below the model family’s top internal combustion engine (ICE) variant.

The GranCabrio Folgore large convertible will start at €210,700 in Italy while the GranCabrio Trofeo’s base price in its home market will be €235,800, the automaker said at an event here, near Maserati headquarters in Modena. The lower price comes despite the battery-electric version offering 208 hp more power than its gasoline-powered sibling and a 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) time that it nearly 1 second faster.

The strategy aligns with Maserati’s pricing on the GranTurismo.

The full-electric Folgore variant of the large coupe is also €25,100 less than the top-of-the-range ICE variant, the Trofeo, even though the Folgore offers more power (750 hp versus 542 hp) and faster acceleration (0 to 100 kph in 2.7 seconds versus 3.5 seconds).

The price difference is less pronounced for the Grecale Folgore EV derivative (see table, right).

All Maserati EVs include Folgore, which means lightning in Italian, in their names.

The Grecale Folgore is priced about €6,000 higher than the new full-electric Porsche Macan, which starts at €121,242 in Italy. The price difference with the Macan is consistent with a more luxury positioning, a Maserati spokesperson said.

Overall, the brand is struggling in Europe, where first quarter sales were down 42 percent to 1,403, according to preliminary data from market researcher Dataforce. Of that total, only 44 were full-electric models: 32 GranTurismo Folgores and 12 Grecale Folgores, Dataforce’s figures show.

Maserati CEO Davide Grasso, who attended the event in Rimini, declined to give sales or production targets for the EVs, adding that output of the models only recently started. He said the Folgore versions would be sold in all markets.

Despite declining first-quarter demand for EVs in key markets such as Germany (-14 percent), Italy (-18 percent) and Sweden (-19 percent), the Maserati reaffirmed its target of becoming electric-only by 2028.

The automaker’s full-electric range should be completed in 2027 with the arrival of the next-generation Levante large SUV.

A full-electric successor to the Quattroporte large sedan is scheduled to debut in 2028.

Maserati announced in January that it has halted development of the Quattroporte BEV, which was supposed to be unveiled in early 2025.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said earlier this month that he had received “an indirect offer” to sell Maserati, but he refused. The rebuked offer was from a Chinese automaker, according to Italian magazine Quattroruote.

Both the GranCabrio and GranTurismo Folgore are assembled are at parent Stellantis’ Mirafiori factory, near Turin, alongside their respective ICE siblings. The Grecale Folgore is assembled alongside the ICE versions in the Stellantis’ plant in Cassino, Italy, where the Alfa Romeo Giulia midsize sedan and Stelvio midsize SUV are also made.
