Dacia Sandero on track for June sales win while Tesla, VW, Renault fight for second place

The Dacia Sandero is on track to be Europe's best-seller in June, which would be the fourth time that the small hatchback finished at No. 1 in the first six months of this year.

Sales of the Sandero sales rose 20 percent last month to 26,557, according to Dataforce's preliminary data representing 95 percent of sales in the European Union, the EFTA countries and the U.K.

In June of 2023, the Sandero finished nearly 10,000 sales behind the Tesla Model Y.

This June the Sandero is on pace to outsell Tesla's full-electric midsize SUV by more than 5,000 units, although that gap is expected to close once sales figures from Croatia, Hungary, Portugal and Sweden are finalized. Based on preliminary data from Sweden, the Model Y outsold the Sandero 2,122 to 306 in June.

The Model Y is in a tight race with the Renault Clio and last month's sales winner, the Volkswagen T-Roc, for the No. 2 spot in the June sales race.

Clio sales were up 4.9 percent to 21,954 last month, the T-Roc rose 5.3 percent to 21,676, and the Model Y slipped 30 percent to 21,285, according to Dataforce's preliminary figures.

The resurgent VW Golf is fighting with the Tesla Model 3 for fifth place in June sales.

Sales of the Golf rose 20 percent to 19,693 last month as VW continued to benefit from a major face-lift to the compact hatchback revealed in January to extend the model's life before it moves to an all-electric drivetrain for the next generation.

The Model 3 had an even better month than the Golf, increasing sales 46 percent to 19,125.

Another tight race is for seventh place between the Toyota Yaris Cross, Dacia Duster and Citroen C3. The Yaris Cross leads the Duster by 19 sales and the C3 by 150, according to Dataforce's preliminary numbers.

Therefore, there could be some position changes after the sales data is finalized.

In June, VW brand had seven models in the top 50, Toyota had five while Skoda and Peugeot had four.

H1 leaders

The Sandero leads the pack with first-half sales of 144,205, followed by the Golf with 125,591 and the Clio at 113,620, according to Dataforce's preliminary figures.

Rounding out the top five at the T-Roc (111,442) and Peugeot 208 (105,940).

The Model Y, last year's H1 sales leader, finished the first six months of 2024 in eight place, slipped behind models such as the Citroen C3 and Skoda Octavia, according to Dataforce's preliminary figures.
