Europe July sales by brand and model: Tesla, Maserati, Porsche report strong gains

Lynk & CO, Genesis, Cupra and Land Rover had big increases, while seven brands slid into negative territory but beat the market.

    Lynk & CO, Tesla, Genesis, Cadillac and Cupra had triple-digit sales gains in July. Meanwhile, MG, Rolls-Royce, Maserati, Aston Martin, Bentley, Dacia and Porsche had double-digit percentage increases in an overall European market that was down by 11 percent.

    Lynk & CO, which is a subscription-focused brand, had a strong month with 1,525 registrations of its 01 plug-in hybrid, up from just 285 last year as it was entering the market.

    Tesla increased sales 158 percent to 2,305 EVs, led by the Model Y, which accounted for 1,893 units of the U.S. brand's total, according to figures from market researcher Dataforce.

    Hyundai Group's luxury brand Genesis was up nearly 140 percent to 196 registrations compared with just 82 during July 2021, also because it was just starting to enter the market.

    Cupra was up 104 percent, helped by strong demand for the Formentor SUV, which recorded a 61 percent increase in sales last month.

    MG increased sales 80 percent to 7,105. This was driven by a 39 percent increase in sales of the MG HS compact SUV to 2,235 units.

    Porsche rose 16 percent on strong demand for the Cayenne (+48 percent) and Macan (+37 percent) SUVs.

    Tesla increased sales 158 percent to 2,305 EVs, led by the Model Y.

    Also among the 27 brands that recorded gains during the month were Alfa Romeo, Lamborghini, McLaren and Polestar, according to Dataforce.

    Prolonged supply-chain disruptions as well as rising prices and falling consumer confidence were among the reasons for the region's sales decline.

    Alfa Romeo increased July registrations 39 percent, helped by brisk demand for the new Tonale premium compact SUV.

    Dacia was up 15 percent, led by a 28 percent sales increase for the Spring EV minicar, which is the No. 10-selling EV in Europe through seven months.

    Other brands that gained volume were Rolls-Royce (+60 percent), Alpine (+53 percent) and Aston Martin (+34 percent).

    Brands that recorded declines but still beat the market included Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, Citroen, Hyundai and Renault, which was down 7 percent.
