FRANKFURT -- Volkswagen is resuming deliveries of the new Golf model after fixing a software glitch, a VW spokesman said on Thursday.

VW halted deliveries of the model last month after discovering a problem in the software, which enables emergency calls, a function required by EU regulations since 2018. VW said the problem could lead to the unreliable data transmission.

A VW spokesman told the Handelsblatt business paper that the error had been found. The cars affected will now receive a software update that will eliminate the error, the paper said.

Since last autumn, about 30,000 Golf models have been produced with the software bug, mainly for the European market, Handelsblatt said.

VW has given the eighth-generation Golf new technology such as a fully digital cockpit to keep the car attractive as more customers switch to crossovers or premium hatchbacks. But the advanced technology caused technical bugs.

The Golf is the top-selling car in Europe with a volume of 410,779 last year, down 8 percent, according to JATO Dynamics market researchers.
