The British automaker slumped to a 354 million pound loss in the first half of its fiscal year amid falling sales, high costs and production freezes. We look at what other steps JLR needs to take to get its business back on track.

Pieter Nota is one of the rare executives from outside the car industry to land a top job at a German automaker. After nearly 30 years at consumer giants Unilever, Beiersdorf and Philips, the Dutch manager started at BMW a year ago as head of sales at the brand. He has his hands full as competition for leadership in the premium sector intensifies and the shift toward electrified, connected and autonomous cars accelerates. He discussed these challenges.

Diesel sales are expected to decline again in Europe this year, but a regulatory crackdown could help to mitigate a crisis. “The pendulum is still swinging against diesel, but the worst might be over,” said Al Bedwell, director global powertrain for forecaster LMC Automotive. The key to reviving diesel sales, the industry believes, could be an upcoming deadline to ensure that all new cars sold in Europe comply with the Euro 6d-temp classification. Kia Europe Chief Operating Officer Emilio Herrera told us the European diesel share is stabilizing “at about 30 percent.”
