Why the ID5 is VW's true rival to the Tesla Model Y

The ID4 compact crossover has been touted by Volkswagen and others as the first real direct competitor to Tesla. But the better one-to-one matchup between the two brands vying for leadership in the electric vehicle universe is the ID5.

The ID5  will have a car-like sloping roof at the rear that gives it a far more similar look to the Model Y than its sibling, the ID4.

VW Group Chief Designer Klaus Zyciora has signaled a need for coupe-styled SUVs because they offer better aerodynamics, resulting in greater efficiency. VW brand had not previously offered such a body style in Europe, however.
