Chinese electric automaker BYD could launch SUVs in Europe that will rival the Mercedes G-Class, Land Rover Defender and Ford Bronco.
BYD is considering exporting the Yangwang U8 and the Fang Cheng Bao 5 to Europe executives said during press presentation in Shenzhen, Automotive News Europe sister publication Automobilwoche reported.
BYD plans to showcase the U8 full-size luxury SUV at the Geneva auto show in February.
The SUV costs about 140,000 euros ($152,000) in China. It's powered by an electric drivetrain with a 49 kilowatt-hour battery and a range-extender gasoline engine, giving it a range of 1,000 km.
The U8's off-road capabilities are boosted by having one electric motor per wheel, allowing it to turn on the spot like a tank and slide sideways into parking spaces.
BYD claims the vehicle is so tightly sealed that it can float in water for half an hour, despite its 3.5-tonne curb weight.
