French sales up 22% in April as rebound reaches 9 months

PARIS -- French auto sales jumped by 22 percent in April, as the market continued to rebound from component shortages, trade group PFA said. Big gains were reported at Cupra, Dacia, Renault and Seat.

For the year, the market is up 17 percent. Sales have risen every month since September 2022, compared with the same month a year earlier.

Sales at Volkswagen Group’s Spanish brands, Cupra and Seat, were up 77 percent and 48 percent respectively. At Renault Group, Dacia sales were up 64 percent and Renault brand sales up 50 percent. Other brands that saw big jumps included Suzuki (41 percent) and VW brand (36 percent).

Sales of full-electric cars fell slightly to 13 percent of the market from 17 percent in March, and as a consequence CO2 emissions rose to 102.5 grams per km from 97.5 in March.
