PARIS -- French car sales slumped again in April, falling by 23 percent, as European manufacturers’ supply chains were hit by the fallout from the war in Ukraine.
There were 108,723 new cars registered for the month, the PFA auto association said in a statement on Sunday. For the year, French sales are down by 19 percent.
Nissan (+48 percent), Ford (+11 percent), Dacia (+6.5 percent) and DS (+1 percent) were the only volume manufacturers to post gains in April, according to PFA figures.
Cupra, the new subbrand of VW’s Spanish brand Seat, saw sales jump by 161 percent, to nearly 700 units for the month.
The supply-chain disruptions caused by the Ukraine war are eroding European car manufacturers’ hopes for a recovery from last year, when a shortage in semiconductors idled plants. Passenger car registrations in Europe slumped 19 percent in March, a ninth straight monthly decline.
