Shanghai show highlighted shift from surviving pandemic to intensifying competition

Luxury marques rolled out dazzling array of electric cars

    SHANGHAI — It was clear at the 2021 Shanghai auto show that the mood of China’s market has shifted from surviving the pandemic to intensifying competition. Luxury marques are rolling out a dazzling array of electric cars. Global brands unveiled new products aimed at a chance to capture market share.

    Geely rolled out a new flagship model (seen above), a high-end long-wheelbase variant of its Xingyue crossover, with accentuated lighting design.

    Ford Evos

    Possibly heralding the Fusion replacement in the U.S. and the Mondeo in Europe, the Evos represents Ford’s effort to rebuild its share of the mass market in China.

    Chery Jetour X70 Plus

    Chery Automobile showed the large X70 crossover, marketed under its Jetour brand. The unveiling comes as Chery is eyeing U.S. distribution.

    Audi A7L

    Audi’s stretched A7L will come in longer than its imported A7 Sportback and will be the first Audi produced at Volkswagen Group's joint venture with SAIC later this year.

    BAIC Arcfox aS

    BAIC unveiled an upgraded Arcfox aS electric crossover. In a nod to its new tech, it now declares “Huawei Inside.”

    Nissan X-Trail

    The industry buzz may be on EVs, but Nissan’s sole debut was a gasoline-powered crowd pleaser, its fourth-generation X-Trail compact crossover.

    Lexus ES

    Lexus chose Shanghai to reveal its 2022 ES refresh, an update that focuses on fresh headlamps and grille design, new wheels and infotainment touch screen.

    Volkswagen ID6

    China’s consumers are shifting to larger vehicles, and several Shanghai debuts obliged. Volkswagen’s ID6 EV crossover will come with with six-seat and seven-seat variants.
