TOKYO – Tokyo prosecutors have appealed a verdict that cleared former Nissan director Greg Kelly on most counts in the long-running trial over alleged financial misconduct by Carlos Ghosn.
The filing on Wednesday comes just days after the American – free from Japan on a suspended sentence – had a tearful homecoming to Tennessee and ensures his years-long legal odyssey will drag on. The appeal also puts Kelly in renewed legal jeopardy, at least in theory.
Last week Deputy Chief Prosecutor Hiroshi Morimoto said that if the appeals court finds Kelly guilty on a wider scope of allegations and hands down an actual prison sentence, the 65-year-old grandfather of two could be extradited back to Japan to serve time.
