Lotus increased sales by more than 800 percent in April on strong demand for the Emira.

Twenty-one brands increased their April European sales by more than the market, which was up 16 percent, while 34 brands ended the fourth month of the year with volume gains.

Meanwhile, 25 brands were in negative territory last month, according to preliminary figures from market researcher Dataforce.

Seven brands, led by Geely subsidiary Lotus, Tesla, China's BYD, and Stellantis' Alfa Romeo brand, reported triple-digit percentage sales gains.

Meanwhile, Maserati, Genesis, Lexus, Cupra, Rolls-Royce, Dacia and Porsche were among the 24 brands that had double-digit percentage increases, according to data representing about 90 percent of sales in the European Union plus ETFA countries and the U.K.

Lotus was led by the Emira sports car, which accounted for 98 percent of the UK brand's sales last month.

Tesla sales jumped nearly 800 percent year over year to 12,383 in April, with the Model Y accounting for more than 70 percent of the EV maker's volume. That increase was a significant dip on the 60,933 cars Tesla sold in March.

Tesla's volume in May and until late summer could be positively affected by a move made this month as it increased discounts for business customers in Germany.

Tesla is offering fleet buyers an additional discount of 2,250 euros ($2,447). The incentive will be valid for all immediate orders of the Model 3 and Model Y delivered by the end of August.

BYD was led by the Atto 3 compact SUV, which helped the Chinese brand increase sales more than 260 percent last month.

Alfa Romeo increased sales 122 percent because of demand for the Tonale compact SUV, which accounted for 70 percent of the Italian brand's sales.

Maserati increased sales 94 percent to 633. The new Grecale premium midsize SUV accounted for 79 percent of the Stellantis luxury brand's volume. In March, that share was 75 percent.

Hyundai Group's luxury brand, Genesis, was up 90 percent to 241 units.

Lexus recorded an 80 percent gain, helped by brisk sales of the UX and NX SUVS, each of which increased sales by more than 85 percent last month.

Volkswagen Group's Cupra subsidiary increased sales 56 percent to 14,437, led by the Born compact electric hatchback and the Leon compact hatchback powered by combustion engines.

A 69 percent gain in sales from the Cullinan underpinned Rolls-Royce Cullinan's overall increase of 49 percent for the month of April.

Dacia and Porsche rose 45 percent and 44 percent, respectively.

Renault's budget brand was led by the Sandero, which is poised to be Europe's No. 1 seller for the month given that it has a 1,327-unit lead over the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa, according to preliminary figures.

VW Group's high-margin sports car brand was lifted by a 186 percent increase in sales of the Porsche Cayenne premium large SUV.

Among the other brands that recorded market-topping gains during the month were Renault (+38 percent), Skoda (+35 percent), VW brand (+30 percent) and Audi (+24 percent), according to Dataforce's preliminary figures.

The 14 brands that recorded gains but were below the market average included Subaru (+16 percent), Volvo and Peugeot (both +14 percent) and Mercedes-Benz (+9.1 percent).
