Tesla Model Y is Europe's top-seller for second straight month; Peugeot 208 No. 1 for 2022

The electric SUV was Europe's top-seller for the third time in four months. The Model 3 was second best in December.

    Sales of the Tesla Model Y rose more than 300% in December.

    The Tesla Model Y was Europe's No. 1 seller for the second consecutive month in December.

    Tesla sold 31,562 units of the premium midsize SUV, a gain of more than 300 percent on the same month last year. It was the Model Y's third monthly victory in four months.

    The exception was October, when the SUV fell out of the top 50.

    The Tesla Model 3 was No. 2 in December with a volume of 20,258, a decline of 25 percent, according to preliminary figures from market researcher Dataforce.

    The Dacia Sandero rounded out the top three with sales of 17,592 units, a rise of 5.6 percent, according to data representing about 94 percent of sales in the European Union plus ETFA countries and UK.

    In 2022, six different models finished the month as Europe's top-seller and four of the six won two or more months.

    The monthly winners in 2022 were the Dacia Sandero (January), VW Golf (February and October), Tesla Model 3 (March), Peugeot 208 (April-June), VW T-Roc (July-August) and Model Y (September, November and December).

    In December seven of the models in the top 10 recorded sales increases, according to Dataforce's preliminary figures. Joining the Model Y and Sandero with gains were the Toyota Yaris, VW Tiguan, VW ID4, Volvo XC40 and Ford Kuga.

    The other cars in the top 50 with big gains were the Kia Sportage (+155 percent) while the VW ID3 rose nearly 100 percent and the BMW 3 Series and 1 Series were each up by more than 50 percent.

    Europe's overall winner for 2022 was the Peugeot 208 with a volume of 199,302, according to Dataforce's preliminary numbers.

    The Sandero was poised to be Europe's No. 2 seller in 2022 with 191,499 sales, a rise of 1.3 percent on 2021, according to the preliminary figures.

    The T-Roc led the VW Golf in the race for the No. 3 slot by nearly 4,000 units, based on the preliminary numbers.
