VW was helped by the T-Roc, which had 10 placements in the top 10s in Europe after 11 months.

Toyota models appeared 51 times in the top 10 rankings of 28 European markets through 11 months.

That is down from 59 after 10 months, 57 after nine months and 52 after six months, according to figures from market researcher Dataforce .

However, two key markets for Toyota -- Ireland and Slovakia -- were late with their figures. Based on past results, Toyota could gain as many as six additional placements once all the figures are calculated, boosting its total to 57.

Volkswagen was second with 35 top 10s, down from 38 after 10 months and down from 39 after nine months. Based on past results, VW could gain as least one additional placements once all the figures are finalized.

Ranking third was Skoda, with 26 placements, down from 32 through October, but it is likely to gain roughly five placements once all the figures are completed.

Dacia was ahead of Kia 25 to 23 based on the preliminary 11-month figures. The two were tied through October with 25 markets apiece.

Peugeot had 20 appearances in top 10s, the same as it did after 10 months, while Hyundai had 14, according to Dataforce's preliminary numbers.

When it comes to the vehicles with the most placements, the Skoda Octavia led the way with 14, followed by the Dacia Duster (12) and Toyota Corolla (11).

Three models tied with 10 placement -- the Dacia Sandero, Toyota Yaris and VW T-Roc -- while three models also tied with nine placements apiece -- the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage and Toyota RAV4 -- according to the preliminary figures.
